Trip Description

Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri Trek is a 14-day popular trek in the Everest region also known as the Gokyo valley trek. Trekking in Gokyo valley is one of the most beautiful trekking experiences in Nepal. This trek offers amazing views of Mt. Everest and the other Himalayas from Gokyo Ri at an elevation of 5386 m. This route comprises the largest glacier in the Himalayas (the Ngozumpa Glacier), beautiful lakes, a view of five 8000m peaks from Gokyo Ri, a Wide range of flora and fauna along with the opportunity to experience the Buddhist religion and culture.

The Gokyo Lake is situated on the west side of the Ngozumpa Glacier. This trek begins from Kathmandu with a scenic 30 minutes flight to Lukla from where you will be hiking towards the upper elevation to reach your destination Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri. Upon reaching Namche Bazaar, you’ll deviate your way from the traditional Everest Base Camp route and take a quieter route. And, finally, reach the beautiful Gokyo Valley where you’ll be spending two nights in the settlements of Dole & Machhermo.

As you will reach Gokyo Valley, you will feel like the valley is smiling to welcome you together with its shimmering lakes. On your trip to Gokyo, you’ll have an opportunity to explore four or five of the six Gokyo Lakes—the third lake Dudh Pokhari, the fourth lake Thonak Tsho, and the fifth lake Ngozumpa Tsho is the major attraction of Gokyo Valley. Then, you’ll climb up to Gokyo Ri and get mesmerized by the finest views of the Himalayas. You will also be exploring Ngozumpa Glacier as well as walking around listening to one of our crew members telling you a story about the Bigfoot Yeti. After collecting the beautiful memories with proof that paradise on earth is possible and it's in the Himalayas, you’ll be returning back the same route and flying back to Kathmandu.
 

Outlined Itinerary

Day 1 : Fly to Lukla, Trek to Phakding

We will wake up around 5 to 6 am in the morning. Then, our group will be driving for about 30 minutes before the time. The true beginning of your Everest Base Camp Trek will begin on the third day of your trip when you’ll board a scenic flight to Lukla after your early morning breakfast. This brief flight offers you stunning panoramas of the Himalayan range, supplying you with a tantalizing taste of the mountains. From Lukla, you’ll be starting your hike in the direction of Phakding. The small, bucolic settlement of Phakding is situated on the banks of the Dudh Koshi, a high-altitude river that runs all the way from Everest and is named for its milky, opaque water. Day 2 : Phakding to Namche Bazar

Leaving Phakding behind, today you’ll trek north on a path leading to Monjo.
This village is the gateway to Sagarmatha National park, a formally protected area that takes its name from Mt. Everest (called Sagarmatha in Nepali). The park is home to a wide variety of Himalayan flora and fauna, and you're bound to enjoy trekking through sweetly scented evergreen forests consisting of blue pine, deodar, and rhododendron. After crossing a final suspension bridge at the junction of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers, you’ll hike uphill for about two hours before reaching what’s known as the unofficial capital of the Khumbu region: Namche Bazar. Day 3 : Namche Bazar: Acclimatization Day

This day is booked for acclimatization. As you ascend to higher altitudes, it’s
important to let your body adapt to the smaller amount of obtainable oxygen in the atmosphere. Fortunately, there’s a lot to see and do in the colorful commercial hub of Namche Bazaar. From there you’ll get to enjoy your first unobstructed view of Everest itself. Many neighboring peaks including Thamserku, Kongde Ri, and the distinctive summit of Ama Dablam are also visible from the town. You can get to learn Sherpa traditions by paying a visit to the Sherpa Culture Museum. Then you’ll take a short hike to the Syangboche Airport just above the town. From here, you can capture stunning photographs of Namche Bazaar—not to mention the wall of Himalayan peaks surrounding the town. Finally, make sure to visit the Hotel Everest View which is regarded as the highest hotel in the world and offers great views of its namesake mountain from each window. Overnight in Namche Bazar.

Day 4 : Namche Bazar to Phortse

On the sixth day of Gokyo Lake Trekking, you’ll start the trek to Phorse village early in the morning. The trail overlooks the beautiful mountain views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, among others. Mt Thamserku, on the other hand, is in the close-up view. The trail passes through rocky paths. You might also spot a musk deer, danphe, and Himalayan Thar. The trail then gradually descends to Kayangjuma following Sansa— the junction between Gokyo valley and Everest Base Camp. Passing Sansa, the trail will elevate to the Mongla pass (3975 m) from where you can see a glimpse of snow-capped mountains like Mt. Khumbila, Mt Ama Dablam, Tawoche, and Thamserku. The Sherpa community regards Mt. Khumbila as a sacred mountain. After a trek of some time, you’ll reach the walled field area of Phortse. The village of Phorse is at the lap of Tawoche and Cholatse peak. Then, you’ll trek further to reach the village of Phorse and stay overnight.

Day 5 : Phorse to Machhermo

After an early breakfast, you’ll be crossing the forest. The forest then leads you to serene waterfalls and small bridges. After this pleasant trek amidst the natural beauty, you’ll reach the village of Dole—a small settlement with a few teahouses. Climbing uphill further through a scenic ridge,  you’ll reach Machhermo after a trek of almost 5-6 hours. Machhermo village is the last settlement before Gokyo. The Machhermo village is famous for the sighting of yeti in 1974. Overnight in Machhermo.

Day 6 : Machhermo to Gokyo

After an early breakfast, climbing through a ridge Chorten, the trail offers a spectacular view of the valley along with the snow-capped mountains of Mt. Kangtega and Mt. Thamserku. Crossing the ridge, the valley widens, and the trail arrives at the village of Phangka (4480 m). Descending to the river bank gradually, you’ll hike to the terminal moraine to climb the Ngozumpa Glacier and reach the second lake of Taboche Tsho. Further moving ahead of the second lake there is a third lake linked by a water stream. Next to the third lake, you’ll find Gokyo Village from where the majestic Cho-Oyu Mountain overlooks you in the backdrop. After having lunch at this mesmerizing place, you’ll go for a walk to explore the area around the Dudh Pokhari. Overnight at a comfortable teahouse in Gokyo village.

Day 7 : Gokyo Valley: Climb Gokyo Ri and Hike to Fifth Lakes

On this day, you’ll go for short hikes around the area and acclimatize. You’ll also climb Gokyo Ri if the weather is favorable. The top of Gokyo Ri is the best viewpoint of the entire Everest Region. Then, you’ll resume your trail to the fifth lake. The trail climbs up the hill at the edge of the Lakes. The overwhelming views of Everest, Cho-Oyu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makulu, Gyachung Kang welcome you along the trail. The viewpoint is fascinatingly named Scoundrel's Viewpoint. There is a Cho Oyu Base Camp beyond the fifth lake. From the Northern part of the fifth lake, you’ll get to enjoy the magnificent views of the Cho-Oyu Base Camp and the Ngozumpa glacier. Ngozumpa is the biggest glacier in the world. You may also visit the sixth lake if you have enough time on your hands. Overnight stay at Gokyo.

Day 8 : Gokyo to Dole

Today, you’ll be trekking back from Gokyo to Dole quite early. The trail is gradually downhill moving along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River. The Dudh Koshi river originates from the Ngozumpa Glacier. You’ll then pass through the second and the first Gokyo Lakes respectively. The trail passes across a tiny water stream and an iron bridge. As we move along, you’ll get a glimpse of the hamlet of Phangka. The close-up view of the Cholatse and Taboche peaks is overwhelming. Walking downhill below Phangka, fabulous views of Mt Thamserku, Kang Tega, and Cho Oyu will welcome you upon reaching the Chorten at the edge. Overnight at Dole.

Day 9 : Dole to Namche Bazaar

The downhill hike is quite amazing. The beautiful trail is covered with vegetation and wildflowers, including Rhododendrons. You might also spot some wild animals like musk deer, mountain goats, dance pheasants, etc. After passing through a few waterfalls, you’ll arrive at the village of Mong La, a beautiful village perched on the spur of Mt. Khumbila. Following the trail after a few hours of trek, you’ll reach Namche where you’ll be spending overnight.

Day 10 : Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Today you’ll be trekking all the way back to Namche Bazaar from Pheriche. While the distance of this route is about 15 kilometers, it will be significantly
easier since you’re descending. Consider stopping for a lunch break within the little town of Phungi Thanga or Kyangjuma before continuing to descend through pleasant woodlands. After walking further for two or three hours on the trail, you’ll find yourself back in Namche Bazaar. You’ll stay overnight at a guesthouse in Namche Bazaar. Today’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 11 : Fly to Kathmandu

On the 13th day, your successful trek comes to an end. Wake up early to bid farewell to the spectacular scenery of the Khumbu before boarding your morning flight back to Kathmandu. Watching the Himalayas pass beneath your window, you’ll now be able to recognize many of the major peaks. The hustle and bustle of Kathmandu may come as something of a surprise after the solitude of the mountains. You’ll be transported to your hotel to spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Feel free to relax or explore the local markets and eateries. There are plenty of great restaurants and bars in Thamel where you can enjoy dinner before returning to your hotel to spend the night.

1. Best Time To Travel
Spring from March to May and autumn from mid-September to November are considered to be the best seasons to trek. The weather is dry and clear during these times making it ideal for trekking and enjoying majestic views of mountains. The days are mild while the nights are chilly. On the downside, however, these are peak seasons and the trails get crowded and busy.
You can also go for a monsoon or winter trek if you want to avoid the crowds when you can even enjoy some off-season discounts at teahouses which remain mostly empty during these times. But you should be aware of some discomforts (rain, snow, and extreme cold) if you take to the trail at these times.

To get the permits, you will need to provide the listed documents and information:

2. Altitude Sickness
Symptoms of Altitude Sickness may begin once you reach 1500-2000 meters and upwards. If you gain a sudden height rapidly without letting your body adapt to the thin oxygen at higher altitudes, you are most likely to suffer from Altitude Sickness. But if you plan for acclimatization days to your itinerary, you are good to go. 
Acclimatization days are included in your trip to avoid Altitude Sickness. The sickness is common at high altitudes. Please remember that altitude sickness is a topic to be taken very seriously. Here are a few extra prevention tips: 

  • Avoid climbing rapidly, give your body some time to adjust to the environment 
  • Drink more water, not less than 5 liters per day 
  • Eat more, eat often, and eat healthier 
  • Listen to your body, do not ignore symptoms 
  • Do not skip acclimatization days 
  • Be prepared in case of an emergency 

3. Safety and security 
You can have Travel Insurance while trekking which is the safest measure. However, there are some measures following which you can implement to ensure safety: 

  • Secure your belongings 
  • Do not flash cash or jewelry 
  • Have an emergency plan 
  • Do not trek alone 
  • Only choose authorized trekking agencies 

4. Trekking essentials 
People, often you don’t need a lot of complicated gear and equipment.  Here’s a basic checklist of the most essential items that you should not forget to take.

5. Walking hours
On average, walking hours per day is 5-6 hours below 3,000m. For altitudes higher than 3,000m, the average walking time is 3-5 hours per day. The walking hours may vary according to conditions but do not exceeds 6 hours mark per day. 

6. Hiring a Guide
Do good research before hiring a guide. However, if you plan your trip via a travel agency, an experienced guide will be provided for a group of 1-5. A group consisting of 6-12 individuals will be provided with 2 professional guides. Moreover, the package might also include a porter for every 2 individuals.

Yes, the trek is fixable. We can continue to other trekking as per guest request. However, visit other trekking sites may include additional charges. 

 

Trekkers will enjoy 3 hearty meals on each day of the trek. You will have breakfast and dinner at the same lodge where you will stay at night. You will be provided lunch at teahouses or small restaurants along the way. You can easily choose your favorite food from the menu provided to you. Our leaders will make sure that you are provided with the right foods. You will be given fresh and organic fruits. They may be brought from Kathmandu or locally sourced in the villages. Your diet will comprise complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The chefs are well trained in hygienic food preparation and allergy safety. We may arrange vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and kosher diets with prior notice. 

You need to pack your bags lightly because you will not be able to carry heavy loads along with the trek. However, essential items should be kept at least for 8 days. You will not be able to enjoy your journey in the Himalayas unless you pack wisely. You will be sleeping in small lodges and tea houses during the entire trip. Please be prepared with the right clothes as per the season. It will get colder at the higher elevations especially during winters. The trek is comparatively easier than any other trek. This is because it involves shorter days of trekking. You have to reach elevations of a maximum of 4460m. You only have to stay for a few days on higher elevations. Despite this, it is very essential to take precautionary measures. There are green forests in the low altitude which provides plenty of fresh air. The trek begins at an altitude of 800m/2,625 feet which allows sufficient days for adaptation.
